Legendary filmmaker Mike Leigh returns to the contemporary world with a fierce, compassionate, and often darkly humorous study of family and the thorny ties that bind us. Reunited with Leigh for the first time since multiple Oscar-nominated Secrets and Lies, the astonishing Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman wracked by fear, tormented by afflictions, and prone to raging tirades against her husband, son, and anyone who looks challenge way Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister, played by Michele Austin (Another Year), is a single mother with a life as different from Pansy’s as their clashing temperaments — brimming with communal warmth from her salon clients and daughters alike. This expansive film from a master dramatist takes us into the intensities of kinship, duty, and the most enduring of human mysteries: that even through lifetimes of hurt and hardship, we still find ways to love those we call family.
In this high-stakes suspense thriller, Academy Award® nominee Mark Wahlberg (Best Supporting Actor, 2006 – The Departed) plays a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) who is escorting a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they travel through the Alaskan wilderness, tensions rise and trust is tested as not everyone on board is who they seem.
Miami, 1991
When his bloodthirsty impulses can no longer be ignored, young Dexter Morgan must learn to channel his inner darkness as he goes from student to avenging serial killer with the guidance of his father, Harry. Christian Slater is older than James Remar was when Dexter (2006) first aired. Followed by Dexter: Resurrection (2025).
I’ve watched the original Dexter series – all seasons – I hate it, I admit – more than once. I watched New Blood – found it passable. Like many other fans, I thought the Freudian ending was, well, lame.
Maybe it’s the familiar characters – I love that they’re all back and that the show isn’t straying too far from what we’d expect in that regard. Right down to Deb’s manhole and Masuka’s signature laugh. No, I’m not giving away spoilers to say that.
If you’re reading this review, you’ve seen the trailers a few times and had this date on your calendar. For me, the show just got better as it went on. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
The dog man, half dog, half man, is sworn to protect and serve as the cat superintendent Petey the Cat pursues him. Partenope is a woman who bears the name of her city. In Greek myth, Partenope is a siren who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus.
Her body was washed ashore where Castel dell’Ovo is now, giving its name to the city that would later become Naples. Heat Written by: Peter Gregson Narrated by: Peter Gregson, Warren Zielinski, Magdalena Filipczak, Laurie Anderson, Ashok Klouda.
After a disparaging speech, "there were" fellow citizens, and despite her bald head, Partenope listens to his "advice" and touches his face with great compassion. It was at this moment that I realized that the film is not about the beauty of some mythical siren, but about the beauty you see in people beyond their appearance.
And it’s not after he’s lost his youth, as his professor suggests—if he had, he wouldn’t have been able to impress her with his dismal performance during the exam. No, Partenope demonstrates his superpower throughout his life, and there are many examples of this: when she reads John Cheever, she’s an alcoholic, depressed, a miracle; when he passionately kisses a disfigured actress… And because he’s the personification of Naples, the human imperfections he sees are connected to the city’s history—ignorance and misery, patriarchal oppression, religiosity and superstition, violence.
You can’t be arrogant when you’re preaching with your arms around all souls.
Four kids on their home planet make a mysterious discovery that leaves them lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. The holographic circus that entertains Neal’s younger siblings is the same one Chewbacca’s family watches in the infamous Star Wars: The Christmas Special (1978).
Like most ’80s kids, I have fond memories of The Goonies, but I’d be lying if I said it’s a direction I really wanted new Star Wars content to go. I think after being disappointed by the sequel trilogy and so many others, I would rate all of Disney’s live-action content as mediocre to bad, except for Andor, Rogue One, and the first two seasons of Mando.
Give me an Andor-esque show set in the Old Republic with Jedi, Sith, and Nick Gillard as a stunt coordinator in lightsaber battles. HOWEVER…
It’s not offensive or poorly made; it’s not blatantly cheap like the Boba Fett book; it’s not pointless like Mando Season 3; it doesn’t overwhelm the story like the sequels and Kenobi; nor is it dull like Acolyte. The script so far (for episode 2) is decent: the effects, costumes, and locations look great: I suspect this, like Andor, is a passion project for its creators and was treated as a small side project by higher-ups who didn’t bother getting involved, which is a blessing for Lucasfilm these days.
